why did he have to have a press conference about the hurricane?

i have personally never questioned marbury's realness (or integrity), either on the court, personae-wise or as a community figure. i just think he's kind of dense. head in the right place but in the wrong way. like he's got pretty solid principles he lives by but they got damaged in the wash.

i think it went down like this: nba players union had a press conference, he was just one of the speakers because he gave more money than anyone else

like i said, i really think the race/class aspect of this is why it matters so much to the Association. and the "city destroyed" angle. most NBA players are working class, black, and from urban areas. how could this not hit them especially hard?

From InsideHoops:

"The charity basketball game will be held Sunday, September 11th at the Toyota Center in Houston at 5 p.m. CT and will be televised on TNT at 11 p.m. ET. Confirmed event participants include NBA All-Stars LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Garnett, Stephon Marbury, Jermaine O’Neal, Amare Stoudemire and Tracy McGrady. Each player will participate in the game, as well donate funds/supplies to aid hurricane victims."

don't be surprised if this turns into a post sometime soon, but i keep thinking about that game KG played after malik sealy passed. when he pointed up at the heavens after his first dunk.

only basketball can sound the right combination of pathos and affirmation. football's all melodrama and self-indulgent struggle, no life to look forward to, and baseball is like that eulogy that says "now he's in a better place."

btw, i'm seriously entertaining the idea of driving to houston for this thing, so if anyone knows details or is thinking of going themselves. . .

then again, i could make another donation and stay here to watch colts/ravens.

Wow. Lebron, Kobe, T-Mac, KG and Amare. That's like a FreeDarko Dream Team (as in a team similar to the Original Dream Team but geared toward Darko tastes (no duncan), not a collection of adorable oddities and fan favorites).

I'll think a lot less of Duncan if he doesn't volunteer for the game. As the best basketball player on the planet, he has no reason not to be there (except for the fact that he would make the game less exciting).

Foreigners probably have less reason to participate (Argentina has enough of its own problems), and while I would expect Horry or Van Exel to be involved since they're both H-Town residents, those guys certainly aren't uniquely Spur. Bowen shouldn’t be allowed to muck-up such talent, and nobody really cares about Nazr. That places the onus squarely on Duncan’s back.

Other people who obviously should be there: AI and Shaq. I really can’t see Iverson not doing this sort of thing. As the most recognizable athlete in the world Shaq should be there. He wouldn’t let Kobe’s presence keep him away would he?

I’m definitely thinking about going. That sort of talent doesn’t come together under the same roof unless it’s February, and then all the tix go to corporations and season ticket holders. Plus, I have to imagine there would be a lot of celebs in the crowd (for whatever that’s worth). Could make for an amazing afternoon.

Then again, opening weekend is pretty hard to pass up on.

brick, hit me up on the freedarko account if you find out details/if you want to meet up.

yes, that's right, bethlehem shoals and brickowski could potentially sit together at a basketball game of immense stylistic importance. this is a truly historic moment that could only come out of singular circumstances, and has to be on par with the no limit/cash money beef squashing brought about by the hurricane relief effort.

haven't you made this point before: that duncan is a foreigner and therefore judging his "blackness" by african-american standards makes no sense.

what i don't get is that duncan is from the caribbean, shouldn't he still be pretty black? and why doesn't he have an accent?

Perhaps Duncan's a botty boy?

The other thing that I think is interesting about this is that Duncan (no botty boy) BECAME a basketball player BECAUSE of a hurricane.

I can't imagine that Kenny would turn him down if he asked in. I know he's got a 3 month old child, but it's just a drive up I-10 (well, 45 minute flight for him).

no brick, duncan is gay because he doesn't act as black as people would like him to.

when starbury came to NY, fans were pumped because there were no stars, just allan houston aging in dog years and assorted flotsam. knew stef was gully and could go for delf, saying he's the best point guard (please) but that attitude and the bling and everything makes you think of him as someone other than being a "real person". But seeing him have emotion, obviously be real about it and fronting that much scratch? guess i can wear a starbury jersey without feel like i'm lying to myself.

if oakley was still balling, he would slap stef for crying, but sometimes even thugs have to cry.
