Through the Sleepless Nights

Science and religion, earth and the cosmos have fused.

For weeks, I have tried to put my finger on what it is about the playoffs these days that seems so limiting, so much (ironically) less compelling than the regular season. During the Bulls and Lakers dynasties of the past 15 years, I had the feeling that I was watching MJ/Scottie/Kobe/Shaq with all the world. There was a sense of universality to the whole exercise. These days, I don't know. Eighty percent of those polled on ESPN.com said they wouldn't recognize Josh Howard if they saw him at a restaurant. So lonely.

Without further delay, I give you the greatest thing on the internet, and in some ways the best evidence and justification for the sentiment expressed above:

Thank you, Calvin.

This has been the best playoffs in recent memory and yet you complain. What you should be complaining about is the idiotic format of the Finals. Why change everything up for the most important round?

in some ways, the 2-3-2 actually seems to favor the road team. to take the series, they've got to win two out of three at home and split two two game stints on the road. that doesn't sound all that difficult.

the heat are down 0-2, but now can look forward to three straight at home. the mavs, on the other hand, are positively rolling but now get that momentum countered by three straight away games and over a week before it comes back to dallas.

Exactly. It's like the whole regular season is important up until the finals. It now puts the pressure on the Mavs who could possibly come back to Dallas down 3-2. Its far fetched but not impossible. I guess it shortens the series up but the NBA doesn't care or else they would have played on Saturday instead of Sunday. I think the playoffs are great but the format has more flaws than any other proffessional sport.

Agreed. And since the Lig is completely beholden to ABC's weekend schedule anyways, why not keep the 2-2-1-1-1 for the Finals? The 2-3-2 is a relic of the Lakers-Celts days, when the teams had to fly across the country every other day. It seems frivolous now, since we have to wait 3-4 days between most games anyways.

And while we're on the topic, the whole format of the playoffs has been a joke this season. A certain unnamed team fights all season for the best record, only to be rewarded with the imposing Kings in the first round, followed by the 2nd seed in the next round. Why wait until next year to correct a mistake everyone predicted months in advance?
