Get Limber

Dr. LIC's preview of the Warriors/Jazz series now up at Deadspin. Personally, I'm just hoping some of my faith in basketball gets restored, since this weekend was a rough one. Hopefully tonight will give us something to exult about. Oh, and don't forget about my fine-tuning of "basketball is jazz" as reference material!

Darkofan: Are you guys trade and service marked yet ? Don't make any edorsements unless the product meets Freedarko standards, or they offer a lot of money.

That preview was really good. I think it would be cool if everything that Free Darko contributers have written elsewhere (on basketball, anyway) on the Web could be gathered on to this site.

dude, the jazz defeat of the rockets only serves to establish deron williams and carlos boozer AS THE JAZZ'S TWO STARS. i know okur was an all-star, and ak47 used to literally be a defensive monster, but those dudes really stepped it up. check the stats:

boozer: 24 ppg, 11 rpg
williams: 16 ppg, 8 apg, 5 rpg

okur: 11 ppg, 8 rpg
ak-47: 5 ppg, 3 rpg, many tears

random note: i was really hoping the suns would put in jalen rose when nash was too bloody to play yesterday. i guarantee he would've done something awesome.

Maybe he'd bust out that around-the-back layup he used on the Lakers in that finals series.

cant wait to see baron go toe-to-toe with his younger bi-racial clone.

I don't usually ask: if I don't fully understand, I prefer to enjoy the ambiguity. But why the pic from "High Tension"? The revolution of an individual figure breaking into multiple roles? The inability to sustain sanity? The inability for the film to sustain momentum? Or just the terror and horror?

deron williams is a baron davis clone????????????

is that enough question marks for you? seriously, how are they similar other than being fairly big (tall and strong) for point guards? baron is ultra-athletic and quick and shoots too many 3's. deron is a slower and "plays the right way". if anything, deron is a smaller, less good kidd, down to the biracialness and everything.

Deron is no Kidd, either. For instance, he can drain threes off flare screens and jab steps. If Kidd had a jump shot like that, he would immediately ascend into heaven.

"If Kidd had a jump shot like that, he would immediately ascend into heaven."
truth.
all this kobe/tmac/lebron talk would never be. we'd all just bask in the glory of the michael-squared.
who remembers Cal Kidd. damn, he schooled Duke in early 90s.

recluse: besides having nearly identical dimensions and similar stats, a lot of Deron's right way shit comes from the Utah system. Put him in Nellie's "fuck the right way" system and you dont think he uses his tools like the Baron?

Seriously, Matt Barnes must have the worst shot selection of any player in the league.

So...both the Spurs and Jazz win playing GS and the Suns run and gun style? What does this mean? Are we being denied a good show because of Pop and Sloan? Those jerks.

deron-kidd comparison deserves it's own page of question marks. i think Jazz playing uptempo ball for once finally gave more proof to just how Baron-like Deron can be.

Cal Kidd found more ways to hit his own teammates in the face than all the rest of history combined.

I vividly remember him in the college dunk contest: behind the back, off the wall of the gym, over the backboard, dunk on the other side.

I think the D.Will - Davis comparisons are a bit overblown. He's maturing earlier, he's less of a run and gun player, and he will produce fewer points/more assists (in most games, tonight being an exception) than Davis. I also think his man defense is better.
Personally, I think he's his own baller. While the Sloan system seems to suit him, I think he could be more physical than Stockton in the long run because of his build, and thus be more of a post/scoring presence.

Also, the Jazz are the strangest four headed monster ever. I don't think they're a two star team with Boozer and Williams, at least not in the same way that Malone and Stockton were. Sloan is working with a huge bench as we saw earlier tonight, and the load that gets shifted to Harpring, Okur, Kirilenko, and Giricek seems out of proportion to that of other teams. Further, I think the little stretches ot Dee Brown blowing up tonight gives me warm fuzzy feelings about the athleticism and youth of the team.

I'd just like to say I really enjoyed last night's game and if I weren't sitting shotgun in the Warriors bandwagon, I'd be rooting for these Jazz. If they weren't burdened with the "right way" symbolism that "The Utah Jazz" is perenially associated with, they'd be pretty darn FD.

Exactly E, this is the New Jazz we talked about clear back in November. Unfortunately the unwashed masses haven't bothered to watch them play and simply trot out the tired apocalyptic dread of a boring Right Way team that sucks the life out of the viewer.

Anyone who saw last night's Game 1 and didn't enjoy it should probably just go back to fantasy baseball.

Randy did a good job until he broke his hand on the rim against ASU . . . missing a goaltend. Randy Duck was hella freedarko.

Watching B Diddy on his good days has always reminded me of J Kidd in high school--he can look like he's playing a totally different game.

Did it seem to anyone else like the Ws were managing the clock too carefully? Which is to say, at all?

While i'd prefer to see Golden State win, i can't really hate on the Jazz. All i want is for someone different than the Spurs to win the championship. I wouldn't even mind the Pistons winning just because they have so much personality and they aren't as cheap as the Spurs.

Playing the Spurs is like playing a kid who is cheap as hell in Street Fighter II. He'll pick Ken and continuously do the leg sweep on you, or he'll be E.Honda and just "Hundred Hand Slap" the whole fight. Thats the Spurs. They'll isolate with Tony Parker or Ginobli then just have them run straight at the basket and draw a foul or get a layup. Plus i just want to see some new players win the title. Free us from these same guys over and over again.

It's difficult for me to watch the Jazz after they knocked out the Rockets. Every time Boozer beats a Warrior to an offensive rebound and muscles his way in for a dunk, T-Mac weeps a single tear in the darkness.

As someone makes it out of the West besides the Spurs, though, I'm satisfied. If the Finals is Spurs-Pistons again, David Stern will reinstate Joey Crawford to ref all seven games so people tune in to see if Duncan activates his Terminator programming and beats Crawford to death on the court.

And come on. Spamming the Hundred Hand Slap is cheap? Jump over that shit. The Spurs are more like that guy who turtles in the corner for 50 seconds waiting for the impatient opponent to charge in then counters, combos and re-dizzies for the win. Brutally boring but perfectly executed.

i love how much people hate the spurs. has there ever been that much love lost for perhaps/probably the greatest player of his generation? shaq is tim's only real competition for the title, and shaq's lazy. tim cares, has far less help than shaq had, keeps plugging away. but he's hated for being boring? come on. just admit you don't like post play and D (more than half of the game) and be done with it.

It is possible to actively like post play and defense and still only find Timmy appreciable.
