FREE AMIR II

More photos of everyone's new favorite basketball player. These are from China, if you can't tell.

So you're a young dude on the cusp of greatness. You get invited to a far-away land for a Yao Ming-sponsored charity game. What do you wear for your public appearances? Same shirt you rock in the club, even if it's the worst possible garment for an NBA cat to get photographed in.

Amir with a motley bunch of "fans" (HUGE IN BOSNIA AND PAKISTAN?!?!?!?!?). I have no idea how this is the group he came up with in China, or why he had to take a picture with all of them at once. I don't think this is one single crew, unless it's his fan club that follows him everywhere. It's also strange—and refreshing—that this photo was for his own use. Like he was so surprised by his fame that asked its bearers to pose with him.

At this point, I'm convinced that Amir Johnson is the most endearing man in the world, and has already befriended half the league. I also expect him to single-handedly make me watch the Pistons all next season. He's like what Darko would be, if Darko had anything to do with the site he's named after.

That first picture is the raw, uncut essence of freedarko. I wonder if Amir Johnson has any idea that he's the prophet.

I guarantee you not a single person in the last picture knows who Amir Johnson is (basketball player, Detroit Pistons). It's just a travel picture. He probably took some ill tour for English speakers in China, and that was the group that he toured with. That's his "Yo, I saw the Forbidden City with these cats" picture.

I'm gonna be honest... I like Amir Johnson, but I think Carlos Delfino is the true prophet. Especially since, like Darko, he'll never fully manifest.

I once went to Beijing with Ekene, 6 foot 9 Nigerian Dude.

Wherever we went, Chinese people would look at him with a mix of awe, curiosity, and fear that was totally noticable. The reactions that greeted him were those of total wonder and genuine curiosity. Like he was the first giraffe that Zheng He brought back to China or something.

Elderly Chinese ladies would flock him, try to touch him, take pictures with him. It was totally embarassing, and at the same time totally naive and in some ways innocent. (btw, I'm Korean, so I fit right in no problem.)

Which is a long way of saying, I agree with Stop ML -> there's no way anybody knows who the hell Amir Johnson is.

PS: As a Piston fan, I'm glad that we now have reason for FD to watch us. As excited as ya'll are, trust me, we are twelve times more ready to FREE AMIR

PS2: Damn, is the Forbidden City STILL under construction? I first went there in '99 and that thing was under the knife then.

I was in Beijing in July and I guess they're renovating every damn thing in preparation for the Olympics, all the big tourist spots are getting spruced up. The Silk Alley, that infamous counterfeit bazaar, is now an air-conditioned five-story building with coffee shops and a Subway. Some dude on the top floor was selling PS3s.

That was not a 360. Nice video, though.

Love the post.

But, now we're saying that Darko (the man) took your name?

That's some swag right there.
