Swept Away
Hey, remember when that giant NBA history book came out, written by a writer I've in the past had lots to say about, and I didn't say anything about it? Or maybe you remembered that we're working on our own look at pro basketball's past, and figured "FreeDarko's too scared to speak!"
For those of you who care to hear my opinion on The Book of Basketball, kindly enter THE READING ROOM, where myself, Sherman Alexie, Tommy Craggs, Jonathan Lethem, Ben Mathis-Lilley, and Sam Anderson are talkin' Simmons. Presumably, you recognize all those other names. If not, you can meet new people, and read Sam's opening salvo, on the front page. So far, Sam, Sherman, and myself have posted; in the interest of self-promotion, here's a direct link to mine. We each get two, and are hoping for a lively comments section, too, so bring your Sunday best!

You nailed it. Perfect.
And while the premise is dubious to begin with, wouldn't Bill Walton have to be Snoop Dogg? Great precocious prodigy of a master (Wooden = Dr. Dre), at his best as the brighest star w/in construct of a team (1977 Blazers = The Chronic). Wilderness years following career high (1978 season = Doggystyle; foot injury = murder trial; Clippers = No Limit Records) then an unlikely artistic re-emergence on another classic team effort (1986 Celtics = 2001 Chronic) followed by enduring celebrity and cult of personality.
Anyway, The Macrophenomal Pro Basketball Almanac is the gold standard and I can't wait for book 2.
OMFG -- I love Sherman Alexie!
you guys are alright too :)
cool that you gave that an honest assessment, and further, that you declined to turn your post in to a series of rants concerning Durant-Oden. This all makes me think of Dave Chappelle, and how we need to make him secretary of the press, somehow.
Can someone please go over there and change the subject away from Oden? I even got sucked in at point. . .
I actually kind of like the Snoop Dogg comparison, although your narrative is deficient for not addressing "Drop It Like It's Hot" or his forays into acting, pornography production, and reality television.
The acting, porn and reality tv would fall under "enduring celebrity and cult of personality", wouldn't they?
But I agree, that Neptunez minute has to be accounted for. When did Walton go into the HOF?
I tried to get a discussion going around the 1.5 idea. Walton was inducted into the HOF in 1993.
I would say the Drop It Like Its Hot/Neptunes moment, not to mention the awesome Sexual Eruption/Sensual Seduction would be like Walton's broadcasting career . . . he's not really a real player in the game anymore but he continued to make the game more entertaining.
Also, both made great catchphrases like Walton's "Horrribblllee!!" and Snoop's "Fo Shizzle My Nizzle"
And both became somewhat famous fathers, Walton as Luke's dad, and Snoop for Fatherhood.
Snoop: linked to crips . . . Walton: linked to Symbionese Liberation Army . . .
Geez . . .I can see why Simmons goes down these roads (no matter how retarded) . . . its pretty fun
Sherman Alexie is the worst.
