Super nap

No flurry of activity on FreeDarko lately, and that's the way it should be. For although the halls of many a NBA site echo with news of free agent signings, the Troubled Griffin back in jail again, and the summer leagues, none of this is worth talking about (at least not in public). In fact, I would like to believe that what sets us apart is that we're not going to clog up this site with tales of Martell Webster's big night, or make some corny-ass jokes about red hair and Scalabrine's impending time with the Celts (the ultimate fan favorite in a town that lives for fan favorites. And I think you know what I mean by fan favorite). More importantly, I'm knee-deep in the FreeDarko summer retreat, where surprisingly we haven't even talked all that much about hoops. Updates to follow on our attempts at actually playing the game.

A few salient points, if nothing else to convince myself that I don't need to type much more than this for the next couple of weeks:

-Summer leagues aren't just inferior to the pros, they're a whole different language. It's telling that Qyntel Woods can average thirty a night there year after year; that LeBron stumbled in his one go at it is downright mystifying.

-shoefly has succeeded in convincing me that all this off-season drama in the end comes down to money. All that other shit about family and honor is something basketball writers make up so they'll have a column year-round.

-You can no longer build a team around a traditional PF, or even have one as a cornerstone. That's why Brand and Shareef are such perennial losers.

-As Marbury has proven, spending some of the off-season in a cell ain't such a bad career move. Godspeed, Troubled Griffin.

i've said in the past that fan favorites are people the fans can relate to/imagine themselves playing like were they placed in a nba situation. primarily this involves being unathletic, hustling a lot, and generally seeming to overachieve whenever anything goes right. the being white part doesn't hurt, though.

i don't think suggesting that as a city boston has some serious race issues is out of line.

the red hair joke was that both leprechauns and scalabrine have red hair.

Fun Fact-

Ed O.G & Da Bulldogs are from Boston.

Be a father to your child y'all.

[just to keep the bitter sarcasm going]

is that why their second album is called "roxbury 02119"? you could write for the source!

[just jokes]

hey, there's actually big news today. hughes to cavs! i don't know if he's the best complementary player for bron bron, but that's a nice set of wing players. they should sign that lithuanian dude to play the point. mcinnis is talented, but he's a headcase. they can't make the playoffs with him.

what's really curious is the rumor that joe johnson is talking to the hawks. they want ANOTHER wing?? hey, guys, here's a hint: you need a center and a point guard!!!!

Yeah I'm psyched about it. (I'm from Cleveland- like Bizzy Bone) Hughes is solid and a good defender. They still need some shooting though.

I think they are building a Lithuanian crew for Z, they drafted that center kid and now hopefully they sign this point guard. McInnis is a huge reason for the whole meltdown last year.

I'll be disappointed if Johnson goes to the Hawks, I mean I want to be able to watch the guy play.

My first story for the Source would be finding out what C.L. Smooth is up to these days.

seems kind of weird to add players to please Z when bron is so obviously the franchise player, but both the kid they drafted and this point guard seem like good fits. and bron will probably be a brooklyn net at some point (see the cover of the new issue of XXL).

anyway, here's a CL smooth article from last summer:

"Do your job, Pete Rock!"

C.L. is pissed in that article, apparently the Main Ingredient is salt.

The Cavs should have the most cash to resign him right? NBA free agency is pretty much the ultimate example of "money talks, bs walks".

As a Wizards fan, this whole thing makes me sick to my stomach. I mean, for 5yrs, 70mil (that's 12.5 up to 15.9/yr) for LBoogie, a guy that -will- miss 20 games... that's a lot of coin, especially with no guarantee that King James is staying.

The Cavs needed a guy with an outside shot. Hughes ain't that guy. He's a penetrator who can't pass on the break to save his life... seemed like a bad, bad fit for the Cavs.

Of course, the Wiz are now up shit's creek without yon paddling instrument, which makes me less than pleased. You look at a guy like Cuttino Mobley or Bobby Simmons maybe coming in as replacement, but the cupboard for SGs is pretty bare... f'a Sprewell.

the cavs would be able to offer bron the most money, and he's the hometown hero, but it's been widely reported that his endorsement contracts will pay more if he is in a big market, i.e., LA or NYC. not sure if the nets count, but they should, and bron is tight with hov.

That's too bad for bron. Joe Johnson would've been much much better for them. An unselfish player who can shoot a really high percentage when bron and Z get double teamed. Hughes just slashes which is what bron does. Also, hughes is up there with doug christy in overrated 2 guard defenders. They both play the passing lanes, not the man with the ball. You can still go right by both of them. They just get a bunch of steals from gambles. The problem is, they get burned for gambling more than they get the steal. Hopefully, the cavs can pick up a good shooter in the draft next year and trade gooden for a solid hardworking pf. They need a poor man's elton brand.

i always didn't like larry hughes because he was one of those guards that seemed more like a SF. then him and arenas got things going and i was forced to believe that he was an arrival of feeling. now he's abandoned arenas, which i can hardly blame him for doing, but i can remind myself that i find his game somewhat distasteful, even if it's now too grand to be dismissed.

but i don't know why i care so much about cleaveland retaining lebron. that organization stinks and i don't like anyone left on that team. i wouldn't want to see him go to the knicks, which would be just as bad, but really, a lot of my cleaveland optimism was based on the assumption that they'd get complmenetary players like redd, FBP, or johnson this summer. getting hughes means more mess, and the cavs, while lebron's hometown team, don't seem to be doing all that much to deserve him. it's not like they have some god-given, moral right to have him.

how can you dislike anderson varejao?

my bad. i forgot about him; i am so sick of thinking about the cavs' roster that i have hidden away the small pockets of joy, lest they too be spoilt. he should be starting. i don't know what all this "find a PF" crap is about when varajeo is exactly what they need at the 4.
