Too much humble

I know we're all supposed to praise Marvin Williams for wanting to learn, admitting he's young and relatively green, wanting to be a real student of the game. But this photo from the gallery in this month's Dime is a little out of control.

This is a step beyond Duncan's sheepishness, Wade's manners, Nash's introspection, the deference before the Lord common to football and occasionally seen in the Association (more in college?), or the Aaron McKie school of what Big Baby once christened "the all-janitor team." Dude is blankly waiting for the bus, by a parking garage, dressed like he just finished mowing someone's lawn. In principle, this should really annoy me, but instad I think it's kind of bad-assed. Like no one, no one, can fuck with how humble he is.

p.s. Anyone else who's looked at the gallery—is Warrick standing in front of a Bentley, or one of those Chryslers that looks like one? And if it is a Bentley, who the fuck puts a tree-shaped air freshener in a Bentley? Is that hood or straight dress-up box?

here is the year-by-year breakdown of warrick's contract (#19 pick in the draft), based on the cba (the grizzles didn't release the terms, which i don't understand since the salaries are set by the cba)

year 1: 997,100

year 2: 1,071,900

year 3: 1,146,700

year 4: 54.0% option

year 5: 42.6% option

that's at least 3 mill guaranteed. and he copped a chrysler?

or maybe he really wanted to rock the air freshener, and knew that wouldn't be possibly with the bentley

Speaking of Chryslers, did you see that bit about Trevor Ariza and JR Smith on 'NBA Rookies'? Smith's parents are actually making him save his money, only letting him get a 300C. Ariza and Smith are apparently friends, and Ariza had just bought a white convertible BMW 645is when Smith came up to play the Knicks.

This resulted in a great scene with Smith calling mom and saying something to the effect of,
Smith: "Mom Trevor got a BMW, can I get one?"

Mom: "Don't be a fool."

Smith" "But MOOOMMMMMMMMMM!!!"

Makes you remember that outside of being multi-millionaires, these guys still are effectively kids in many cases. Also, Ariza has a lot of sack to buy an $80k car...

i noticed that it was a daily tar heel box, and i thought that maybe the point of the photo was that he'd been puttin in work at some gym, or that he was all-business near the dean dome. but like i remember what the bus stops in ch look like (or that they even look the same anymore); i didn't want to open up a discussion of just how out of touch i am with the old hometown.

i have never watched rookies the same way i have never seen an altman film

i saw this when it came out; at first i thought it made marvin seem a little weird or simple, but really, what's a 19 year-old supposed to do with his money if he has no interest in flossing?

(i'm perfectly willing to admit that the package of rookie purchases is more a responsibility or cultural imposition than anything they think about writ large or consider on an object-by-object basis)
