I live in Canada... and support Europe's brightest and "Dark(o)est" stars.
I want one, is the 'Sheed quote on the back? cuz it ought to be.

word. email freedarko@gmail.com with your address, and we'll figure out the shipping costs. no sheed quote on the back, unfortunately.

That's freakin' awesome! I suspect I'll probably be picking one up for myself sometime soon.

That's not Serbian flag, you know.

I don't know if you've already made like a whole bunch of these or not, but you should TOTALLY put the 'Sheed quote on the back if you still can...I guarantee you people will want to buy!

Is there a way to get a shirt or two by Saturday? I've got courtside tickets to the Pistons/Bucks game Saturday night in Milwaukee and would be more than happy to promote this site and the FREE DARKO campaign

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Question #1: Dear Anonymous1, you are absolutely correct. The Red-White-Blue banded flag pictured above is actually the former Yugoslavian flag, not the Serbian flag.

Now before you accuse Big Baby of a Baltic boo-boo, let me explain. As the foreign correspondent for Free Darko, I am frequently called upon to make hundreds of international hoops related decisions each day, often cutting across sensitive geo-political territory. (E.g. If Travis Best, now playing for UNICS Kazan, gets a 3-second violation due to his unfamiliarity with the expanded lane used in the Russian Superleague, should it be reflected in his assist-to-turnover ratio? The UN does not recognize the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent nation—Does Darko? Is Parker really a Euro?)

The Free Darko design team asked if they could use the Yugo flag for aesthetic reasons, and I gave them the go ahead. As I understand it, this flag was originally adopted by the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1918. Since then it has gone through several subtle permutations, often involving the Serbian cross, and the two headed eagle coat of arms from the House of Nemanjić. Even well after the Agreement on the Union of Serbia and Montenegro was signed on March 14, 2002, the former Yugoslavian flag was de jure.

Adoption of the new S & M flag was delayed for nearly a year due to bickering over whether to adopt the “dark, steely blue” of the Serbian flag, or the “plavetna” (rough translation: celestial blue) of the Montenegrin flag. Finally, after working with a crack team of vexillogy and heraldry specialists, in June 2003 parliament announced it would go with the Red-Blue-White banded flag, with the controversial middle band consisting of an ‘average blue’. (For the full scoop, check out my man Željko on the Serbian flag message board: http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/cs.html)

So, if I got it correct, the S & M flag is Red-Blue-White. The Serbian state flag is Red-Blue-White, plus a two-headed eagle. The Montenegrin state flag is all Red plus a two-headed eagle, and the Yugoslavian flag is dead.

But let’s step back for a minute. What’s really important here is that on that joyous Monday morning, 7,451 days ago in Novi Sad, when the heavens smiled upon us and the 14 pound baby Milicic erupted from his mother’s loins, some combination of these pan-slavic colors were scorching the Serbian skies. The advertisement above will fade into the darkness of the Darko archives, but these T-shirts, in all their metaphysical glory, (and 100% Serbian correct pantone color scheme, mind you), will live on in the hearts, and minds, and closets of Free Darko cadets everywhere for years to come.

Question #2: Dear Anonymous2, the Free Darko coffers are running low this financial quarter, thus we are currently refraining from printing on the back of the T-Shirt. We sincerely hope you are still interested in acquiring said article of clothing though, and gently suggest that these shirts can always be personalized with the help of a sharpie, as yours truly intends to do himself.

Questions #3: Dear Johnny Whitewater, probably not! But hit up the gmail account and we’ll see what our mailroom can do.

We’ve got orders coming in from Australia, Canada, France, even Milwaukee. Now c’mon Detroit, support your boy!

Dear Big Baby Bushels,

I'm impressed by your knowledge and personally satisfied with explanation and use of Yugoslavian flag. With previous comment my intention was to get your attention on this particular detail, which some might find offending, considering what this region has gone through in last decade.

Man, you guys totally got ripped off by the sports guy again... check out the "quote of the day" section at his homepage.

Wow. The new sports guy quote is just ridiculous. I mean, you would think he'd try to not be so obvious. At least, the freedarko shirt could be a link of the day to make up for it. The who wants to sex mutumbo shirt is the opposite of funny.

I'm loving the back of artest's hair by the way. You don't see stuff like that enough these days.

honestly, how you could you not make that rasheed quote the quote of the day? it's not like it was some obscure quote given only to us. i'm not mad at that. and if you read that article on simmons in the NYT, he basically admitted he's shook as hell. we should just leave the poor guy alone.

it's nice to know that artest respects his roots. he wore rodman's number last year, and now he's going for the anthony mason hair verbiage.

The all NBA gangster team:

PG - Rafer Alston - he went nuts three separate times in Toronto last year.

SG - Ron Artest - he went nuts on three separate fans last year.

SF - Ruben Paterson - kobestopper in practice sessions?? i love him

PF - Jalen Rose - Jalen Rose playing the 4? yup. now that's gangster. jalen's random quote of the day: "by the time we got to Detroit, it was almost two in the morning, because ain't nothing open but hospitals, jails, and legs."

C - Yao Ming - have you ever seen him lose his temper? me neither. but watch out when he does. he's a monster.

6th Man - Darko - 6-12 minutes off the bench should do nicely

^ Think you forgot to put Sprewell in there instead of Ruben Patterson, then switch him with Ron Artest.

How do you guys know so much about basketball when your IBB team sucked? And Pittsburgh doesn't even have a pro team, and neither did North Carolina. Answers??

Bwa, ignorant 412hater215.

Masters of Style were back to back champs in IBB. Albeit B-Leage.

Look,
I done played a bit for the Masters of Style, and, besides PayVinay's socks, Timmy T.'s Nocioni-style intimidation tactics were the only thing that separated you from the boys. You talk to Nedzo's old man Flatbush Charlie, and he'll tell you about some ballin' that was out of control, and those cats wore belts when they caged in the P.A.L.

Early!

p.s. Andreo, you'll forever be known as that bol that broke into my apartment 11 first-floor palace on some "summer-acquaintance-neighbor-B&E" shit.

I honestly have no recollection of what you're talking about. Where the hell was apartment 11 anyway?

Anyway, after thinking about it for a solid week now I may recall that when I lacked my keys I got through a first floor window. I didn't think it was a big deal. Sorry, neighbor, I didn't meant to make you uncomfortable.

Great shirts -- don't suppose you have a negative, white on black? More symbolically appropriate, no?

Parker is a Euro. His mother comes from Netherlands, he was born in Belgium and lived in France during his first 19 years !!!! If you are not French when you live 19 years in the same country I don't know what is your nationality ? He also played in all French youth team and in the national squad. I know his Father is american but he's French. Joakim Noah will also play for France and that's great !!!!
