1st Annual Freedarko World Columbian Exposition

For the first time in our three-year history, Freedarko is going to attempt to organize an actual event. The event commemorates the first time that I, Dr. LIC, the Brown Recluse, Esq., and Bethlehem Shoals will all be in the same place at the same time, and that same place is Chicago, IL. So, if you are in the Chicago area, this Thursday night, we would like to meet up with you and drink beers with you.

At Shoals' request that we meet somewhere "extremely uncool" and at the Recluse's suggestion that this venue is huge (to accommodate our legion of followers), we will be meeting around 8pm at:

The Five Star Bar and Grill.
1424 W. Chicago Ave.
312-850-2555

Haters and long-time readers alike, please join me, the Recluse, and Shoals in talking hoops, acting awkwardly, and not looking anything like we thought each other would look in person. Also, I think we should all wear Freedarko t-shirts if possible, to facilitate the meeting of up. People will most likely mistake us as members of the same softball team. Oh, and if the venue actually really sucks, we can go somewhere else around 930.

So, please, Chicago, stand with us on Thursday. It will be awe-inspiring. E-mail freedarko@gmail.com with any questions.

ALSO: Today, the guys over at bleacherbloggers.com were nice enough to interview me for today's episode and make Freedarko their blog of the day. Check em out.

That spot has well above average bar food. Bring an empty stomach. Decent beer selection as well. I'd say occupancy is around 80, but shouldn't be a prob on a Thurs.

yeah, i heard they had good food at this spot. ROLL CALL.

I'll be there in the blue Arenas shirt, armed with evidence supporting the 90-91 NJ Nets (Derrick Coleman, Kenny Anderson, Drazen Petrovic) as the most FD team of all time.

DLIC , et al:

In like Flynn. Five Star is surprisingly easy to enjoy on weekdays. Also, there's a stripper pole in the back.

I will try to be there; if so, I will be wearing my 1990 Detroit "Back 2 Back World Champions" shirt (which I proudly wore throughout fifth grade, along with my Bart Simpson "Cowabunga Dude" shirt).

Regular lurker here too and this is one of the few week/weekends I'm headed out of town!

And I'm going through NBA discussion withdrawal this offseason.

Ditto. Wish I could be there, but I'm nowhere near Chicago.

Besides, it ain't really the FD convention without a Billups cameo!

"Regular Lurker" is the name of my new band. Indie/Punk mostly.

most FD team of all time?? that's easy: gotta be the 2001 Clippers

Odom, Miles, Q, Dooling, Maggette, Cherokee Parks (and his tatoos)

this alone should remove all doubt:

Cherokee parks was hard as hell and he also is 1 of my 2 fantasy team names every year. I alternate between Cherokee National Parks and Dino Radjasaurus Rex.

You bums need to come to florida. I think Gainesville has one of highest (if not the highest) jewish population outside of new york and california. Too bad we lost our World Basketball League semi-pro team last year. They played their games at a small high school gym. Very free darko.

I will attend. Unfortunately, I have neither an FD t-shirt nor my Joakim Noah costume ready.

My last name is Sparks, last year my team name was Cherokee Sparks. It was Kittlesbrau but I changed it.

Anyway, I have a softball game that night but I might stop by anyway. DLIC, I'll be in touch in a non-comment-board format.

Reefer Alston slashed some guys throat. Houston must be crazy during the summer.

Crew game at noon, FD at night, that's damn good 80 mile trip.

Regular lurker, first-time commenter! As a very recent resident of West Town, I can vouch for the Five Star being surprisingly okay during the week. If it's not, the Chip Inn (just around the corner, a block north on Greenview) is one of my favorite bars in the city and is highly recommended. Lacrosse Lager!

i am also a serial lurker. i might come out. one of you dudes knows joshua schwartz, no? i am totally gentile. not that i'm trying to prove anything.

Darkofan: With respect to Goathair's comment above about the FD- ness of a certain Net team, this may be mismatching undistinquished Net's era's , but the comment reminds of Sam Cassel's brief tenure with the Nets and an episode, confirmed by an absolutely reliable source, involving the Nets team bus being turned around enroute to the airport for a difficult road game because Sam had forgotten his new cell phone and was absolutley inconsolable;

And , as painful as it is to revisit, the an effort will be made to send a separate comment on the Vic prosecution. Probably not coincidently, the misgivings expressed in the FD post and in many of the comments actually parallel profound questions raised by the case about the limits of federal criminal jurisdiction, and appropriate deference to State authority to regulate what has historically been regarded as non-federal matters of personal conduct and morality.

(FD continues to never cease to amaze.)

If I weren't like 10 years younger than you guys and flying to NY tomorrow, I'd be all over that.

I did get my shirt today, and it is unbearably legit.

I gotta work early Friday morning; can you move it to the Hooters in Schaumburg?

At 8/29/2007 10:01 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'll be there, if I get my t-shirt in time (not that I'd wear it necessarily, but I'm considering it a sign I should leave my fortress of solitude for a second or two).

This is wonderful. I couldn't find my freedarko shirt this morning, but it sounds like the rest of the softball team will be there in uniform.

salt_b, you're from Schaumburg area? I work in Bloomingdale. Small world.

I hate the burbs but I hate commuting more. So I'll probably not move to city proper unless my job does. I just truck in every weekend or two for the usual spending spree at Reckless. Gettin' the new Numero release this week, and whatever else is good. I will always consider my real home to be dually located in rural central PA (where I grew up) and Philly (where I spent many formative years).

What is it with me and the Midwest? Always the timing is off -- moving back back to Cali Cali just before Sleater-Kinney played Chicago (and after SK already played SF), and going to Iowa for friends' wedding a week before WizardCon -- oops there goes my credibility, to make up for which would be my fantasy squad the past two years running: Okurville River.

At 8/30/2007 5:56 PM, Blogger Leee said...

... which of course is properly spelled Okurvil River.

Bethlehem: if your "scandalous" top 10 cornerstone list was a top 25, would Josh Howard have been higher than Nowitzki? Personally, I was surprised to see Oden or Melo on there, but it wasn't galling. Josh though, he's younger, he hasn't hit his ceiling yet, and is one of the most consistent, versatile defenders in the league.

As a Mavericks fan, Josh Howard is not only my favorite player (aside from former Mav Popeye "Nosferatu" Jones) - at times, I find myself wondering: if defense is given fair credit isn't Josh as valuable as Dirk?

At 8/30/2007 6:36 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Also - I was shocked even you would leave Amare off your list. Without a knee surgery, I truly believe he would average about 30 and 12 night in night out. The guy mutilated the Mavs for 40 and 15 in the playoffs - do you think Oden will ever be capable of that?

About the WCE: PostmanR and I were considering stopping in, as FanHouse brethren, but didn't know if we would still be accepted at 9 or 9:30. What's the timeframe?

Leee - I played cello on "Black Sheep Boy." Nice name for a fantasy team.

Anyway, when's the SATX meetup?

semi lurker and regular 5 star-er here. I stopped by a little early and left around 8:15. Stylishly early. unfortunately, I did not see any FD shirts.

But I did happen to get in a conversation with a guy about the Spurs' shooting coach. He was telling me that he watched the guy before a game and he would stand next to the ball rack, grab the basketballs with one hand, and, with perfect form with his one hand, hit threes every time. So note to all you shooting aficionados out there, to see a shooting clinic, you might want to show up early when the Spurs are in town.

Holopawer- Where is that place? I've heard the name but have never actually been there. I still have the old FD shirt from a few years ago, and when i wore it 2 years ago, no one knew what was going on. Now people are just confused because Darko's no longer in detroit or orlando. I still like playing pickup/intramurals in it anyways. Everyone in florida now knows who darko is at least.

Darkofan 8/31/07: Three quarters of US v. Argentina , lasted through 1:30 AM EDST ( the Commissioner was conspicuously in attendance), third(?) consecutive night of FIBA.

Some sloppiness, of course , but many more moments of transcendence.

At brief times it seems that the world is only a few years away from an around the clock , around the globe, Interantional Basketball League play.
