A Sweet Ordeal For All of Us to Share

Since the book is now actually, finally done, I'll come forth and ask myself: Please feel free to pre-order from Amazon. There's some disinformation on that page, and the cover still might change, but the time has sort of come. So let me offer several compelling reasons for you to cop:

Because our sources told us who "Kaiser" is (see final graf).

Because there are drawings everywhere.

Because there are a ton of those Style Guides that everyone loved so much.

Because it's got some of our most cohesive writing about most of our favorite players' careers.

Because it has graphs that will change the universe.

Because if you think the site is too weird, or not weird enough, there's much for you in here.

Because your girl will like it.

Because longtime readers will recognize some themes, but be taken aback by others.

Because it has a glossary.

Because it's like the blog, but with illustrations, an editor, and lots of elaborate set-pieces we could never pull off on a web page.

Because I once told Dr. LIC that "this book makes our website look like an outhouse."

Because it explains my dip in output this past season.

Because Arenas wrote the foreword.

Because it's now going to be a hardcover, for the same price.

Because you save a bunch of money if you buy now.

Because these playoffs may be sour, but salvation is on the way.

Please please come to Montreal for a book signing. I'll show you where Dalembert hooped.

Fuck. YEAH. Beautiful. Gil, the foreword?
And a steal at that price.

Next, the style guides need to become an animated 3D feature on Inside the NBA.

For those of you who have only discovered FreeD in the last year or so, you should know that summer doesn't truly begin until Shoals has soured on the Playoffs.

Pre-ordered.

I'd say the estimated shipping date of Nov 12 can't come fast enough, but I do live in Chicago and would like the summer to last a while, thanks.

People say it a lot, but it's true for me, too, that this site was a big part of me falling back in love with the NBA over the last few years (to the point where I even do a weekly podcast now.)

So buying the book is the least I can do.

Well Done gentlemen.

Right now the "Customers Who Bought Items Like This Also Bought" suggestions are less than FD, at least by the standards of our collective muxtapes. That'll probably change after more of us order. Can't wait to see what happens when the collective reading habits of the Free Darko clan are sucked into the big Amazon brain.

Since the comments are ablaze with concern about my name being missing from the amazon page, I feel it's my duty to let you know that I did in fact contribute in some minor ways to the book.

Everyone can breath now.

As a Euro reader, I suppose I have to be proud that I'll have it as hard as the fist players to cross the Atlantic. 17 Euros (the currency) through amazon.de, which is a tad above 26$. There'll better be nothing demeaning about Dirk in it!

Just kidding though, glad to have pre-ordered.

Thanks to everyone for the pre-orders and kind words. I can safely say that this book is awesome and everyone will be happy with it.

A few other things:

-Brick, thought of you yesterday when I was reading about the Gervin Spurs in Loose Balls. A lot of the people interviewed claim that, deep down, it's the ABA/immediately post-merger Spurs that are nearest and dearest to many San Antonionaisns hearts.

Order to be placed as soon as I figure out how many gift copies I need.

The cover art looks fan-FUCKING-tastic.

Favorite bits:

* Return of the Style Guide Ball People! Now with more dimensionality!
* Bullet through basketball!
* Shark! (=KB24, right?)

Quibble:

* Two Duncan references on the cover? Plus Speedy Le Peu? How do the Spurs of all team get so much pub from an FD book?

Good Ziller stuff, but doesn't the label "combo guard" carry less negative connotations then the dreaded "tweener" (or even positive ones compared to a tweener)?

Re Lakers future, you're really scaring me as a Lakers fan. I was certainly aware of the decisions ahead as far as Bynum and Odom are concerned, but I had never thought about this in a window of opportunity frame.

As an idealist, I'd hope that money won't be the deciding factor with most of these players. Turiaf and Odom are guys who overcame great odds during their tenure and might have a stronger emotional attachment to their team then regular free agents.

The Lakers rescued Gasol, for which he might be thankful to a degree. And the interest he garnered when Memphis put him on the block was also remote.

The team also stuck with Vujacic through some tough seasons. He will probably get some interest from other teams but I'd question whether someone would go far over a mid-level salary for him (roughly what the Lakers would offer him).

Of the Walton/Radmanovic/Ariza group at least one is bound to stick around which would be enough with a roster where either Odom or Kobe can play some minutes at SF. I guess Fisher will play out his career in LA as well.

So two big questions remain. The first is whether Byum/Gasol/Odom works out, which will be answered next season. If Bynum and Gasol don't mesh or Odom is much less effective at SF, the strategy of handling the roster will probably write itself.

The other big question, as you stated, is how impressive Bynum will play in 08/09. From what I saw at the start of this season, he could easily fall into max territory if he shows no drop-off after surgery. Teams will be lining up to offer him 10+ million. If Cuban was the Lakers' owner I'd be more confident that he'd swallow three max contracts (plus Odom's big salary), but with an old school guy like Jerry Buss, he might try to get by with Byum/Gasol/Ariza/Kobe/Fisher or Gasol/Odom/Ariza/Kobe/Fisher.

Bought. My Amazon recommendations now contain almost all the Flaming Lips albums, A bunch of books about Joe Frazier, and Let's Speak Ilokano! (Ilokano is the third most widely spoken Philippine language). I want to know who bought this and also bought See Jane Lead (a book about how to be a good woman boss).

Congrats.

I wonder if it'll be a canonized masterpiece or an exercise of experimental brilliance. Either way, it will surely be an excellent read and will transcend 08/09.

PS. I hope that the impending success does not make y'all go Chappelle on us.

I would buy two books if Shoals & crew (Billups mandatory) do a signing.

Pre-ordered. Did we ever decide whose muxtape was deemed book worthy? I had a lot of fun with that post.

And after last night I'll never say a cross word about Joey Crawford ever again.

I was intrigued to find your book already at #1 in Amazon's category for Almanacs. As a voracious reader of almanacs, I must say well done. The almanac game is a tricky business that has done in many a fine writer.
