FD in the Flesh

Since Monday, the only basketball I've taken in is a nightly check of my fantasy team, which means I'm aware of Westbrook's tideswell and Garcia's return. Still, next week commences the FD East Coast tour—turns out most of it's around NYC, which I like to think makes it a special limited engagement by three psychopaths. You can catch the calendar here, but I thought I'd break it down a little more gradually, especially if any Philly people (sorry dudes, we tried) were planning to make a trip up.

12/2: Vassar College

All-out kid, no turnbacks. Full presentations from myself, Big Baby with the art, and Silverbird's stats. Then question and answer. Then watching some ball at a bar. You will never be more sick of us than after this night.

12/3: KGB Radio Hour with Mark Jacobson

Interview show at legendary literary hangout. We're a low priority, but will share the stage (and the eventual airspace) with Jules Feiffer and Steve Earle. If people show out for this one, it will impress these dudes of note.

12/4: Varsity Letters

Gelf's series that you probably know already. Fifteen minutes of us plus Q&A.

12/5: Georgetown

For D.C. and its assorted folks. Like Vassar, a thousand endless hours of estrangement. I'm counting on Steinz to get this party started.

12/9: Sugar Lounge

Just chill with us in Brooklyn if you hate readings. Originally the plan was to watch the Knicks but I suspect that might change.

12/10: Charles O. Dewey Middle School

Wherein we give back to the community.

UPDATE: If you need motivation to attend one of these events, consider that you might find yourself caught up in a fascinating conversation with Shoals about "single game indicators," such as the one that ultimately led to this post from Kevin Pelton at Basketball Prospectus. Can you really allow yourself to pass up that opportunity?

I remain amazed that Oakland is not on the FD Tour.

The mathematics is pretty simple: We're first-time authors with no star power and a limited marketing budget. We'll go wherever we can get an invitation plus funds. I'm on the East Coast anyway for family stuff now, and these are places that wanted us. I'd be more than happy to come down to Oakland from Seattle, but I'm not paying out of pocket for it.

I can't believe it, I care about the Knicks now. This can be the validation of 7 Seconds, the legitimazation of 'wrong way', the enoberation of swag by system (which even though the concept would seem to be an antimatter-universe Spurs, is still really cool if you're a scrub)
What D'Antoni, his usual core 7 fedayeen, & Walsh have pulled off is nothing short of mycoremediation. To wit, they're the mycelium, imparting 130pt+ shroomy goodness into the toxic hydrocarbons of the MSGarden environment and turning the contracts of Randolph, Crawford, and eventually Marbury, James, & Curry into so much fertile soil, ready for new growth.
And on less lofty notes, I love the idea that a New York-based D'Antoni team might get calls in the playoffs he never used to get out West.
I'm not even a Phoenix fan at all, but at this point I feel so strongly invested about the 'rightness' of 7 Seconds Or Less that I found myself recounting all the ways the Suns got ripped off and that at the very least 7Sor< has not yet been completely disproven because of things like suspensions, bloody noses, and broken eye sockets. That's my request for the next macrophenomenal, guys- a section about team swag. Real gestalt shit.

oh yeah, p.s., count me among the many who would read (nay, DEVOUR) a hard sci-fi novel about JR Smith, or even just a thinly veiled version thereof. Flow My Threes, The Swingman Said. I think you should hold Bloomsbury to that!
Of course, if his career stagnates in Denver, what could that be but...Snow Crash. Oh god. Must stop.

p.s. I usually comment under open id as tredecimal, but that shit's been broke all over blogger for awhile now

Despite my efforts to rock the Strand reading, it seems like I failed. I will be arriving in time for the KGB bar reading, but will be reading poetry the night of the 4th, having to miss the Gelf (or preferred) reading. BRING THE FUNK and/or NOISE.

Note: I went to the Warriors-Knicks game, and I must tell you-- David Lee really wants that extension. He's even learned how to effectively run a pick-and-roll-- instead of setting a pick and drifting toward the basket, he devours the lane against smaller defenders. It's kind of cool to see from the top rows of the Garden.

Did Devin Harris have his "single game indicator" coming-out party tonight? Was he already well-established enough not to qualify for this sort of thing? Is 47-7-8 impressive enough from the single-game perspective? It certainly seems like the beginning of something or other, one would sort of have to think.

(Note: I'll still come to at least one reading even if Shoals answers that question here, digitally.)

I wanted to wish the freedarko crew all the best on the east coast swing. I am sorry you will not make it up to my beloved Portland ME but maybe next time.

I will be looking forward to Friday as I have tix for Celts-Blazers.

Why are the sixers so bad and how come the Nets keep winning? Is Elton Brand really a mojo crusher? Is Brook Lopez the new answer?

So there's no chance you're coming anywhere farther South than DC, huh? You know, the RTP area in North Carolina (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) is one of the fastest growing parts of the country, with lots of basketball fans too.

I'm pissed off that I can't hit up any of the NYC dates, but wanted to say I finally got my book (long story) and it was the only thing keeping me sane on the 8 hour (four longer than scheduled) bus ride from Providence to NY yesterday. So, thanks.

When looking for a place to catch a game in Po-town, I suggest the Dubliner. It's a nice bar, nice staff, and enough TVs that you will be able to get the game on somewhere. In general the Poughkeepsie bar scene is pretty bad so don't expect too much but that would be my recommendation.

If anyone has resources to provide for travel and housing expenses, I think Shoals or one of us would be happy to show up and drink beer and watch basketball with you. But, it's not like we can afford to fly around the country on our own dime. Sorry if that sounded snotty, it's just reality. Please contact us if you are able to set up an event.

Too bad you won't be coming to the Providence area. We have a nice little city now.

For those that care--the shirts are finally here! They look pretty awesome, I have to say. If I hadn't lost my fucking digital camera, I would post pictures. It'll take me a minute to fill all the orders, but they should all be shipped out by the end of the week. Thanks to everyone for being chill about the delay. I hope when you get the shirts, you'll feel it was worth the wait.

Just got this email:

Also on Friday, get a further basketball fix with WGTB's FreeDarko event. If you have any interest in the NBA, you should be reading FreeDarko, one of the best and funniest basketball blogs on the Internet. The writers of FreeDarko will be discussing their new book, The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac. The event is FRIDAY at 7pm in White-Gravenor 201A. This is only one of two college stops on the FreeDarko East Coast Book Tour. Come out for a great discussion on the NBA (and see if these guys know how to get your foot in the door as the next Wizards head coach). It'll be a great lead-in to the women's game following at McDonough!

Advice on how to get a coaching gig eh? Didn't know you guys had that much insider access...

We'll be there around 8:30. The plan is to drink and watch games.

Also, can someone who was at KGB tonight pleas confirm for me that it really happened, so I can put it on my children's mausoleum?

It happened.

The FD dudes of note were gracious and funny – no small accomplishment given that their interview represented an abrupt turn in the program’s ongoing discussion. I know that at one point during the FD interview, an audience member asked, “Are we going to hear more music?” I wish she (or someone) had shouted that while Mr. Feiffer was giving a monologue.

The Bar Mitzvah story was hilarious.

Sorry to disrupt the love-in and even slightly sorry to discuss the evil empire, but did any catch Celtics Pacers.

Rondo's recent play and last nights triple double are just amazing.

16 points, 13 rebounds, and 17 assists, plus 3 steals for good measure.
